Hitting Rock Bottom with Depression, the Fight

Back, and a New Life, Better Lived

Excerpt

At last, with calm and courage, I can finally put into

writing what I have postponed for months. Revealing

deeply personal and sometimes embarrassing details is

not something one easily does. We often carry our pain

and struggles quietly, hiding them in the safe corners of

our hearts. We convince ourselves that our battles are

unique, preferring to show the world a cleaner, brighter

version of who we are. Many will maintain this façade for

as long as they can keep hiding, pretending, and living

double lives until they are completely broken. Only when

there is nowhere else to turn does one finally speak.

This book is a recollection of my two-year battle with a

merciless beast an enemy that bows to no strength or

threat. It is a monster with double-edged fangs, like a

venomous green snake concealed beneath freshly cut

grass. This beast—depression—is fearless and

indiscriminate, crossing barriers of class, race, creed,

and faith. Its destruction leaves countless victims as

shadows of their former selves. Yet among them are a

few who rise, who summon their last ounce of strength

to fight back. To those, life grants the crown of a

humbling victory.

This is my story of walking through hell, losing my way,

and finding a new path toward healing from the

suffocating grip of depression.

The continuous stress levels with no reprieve re wired

my brain to become stress driven, forming maladaptive

pathways that were fear and flight based. Consequently,

healthy neuro pathways were replaced by unhealthy

ones and my brain shifted into an adverse way of

controlling other life functions. Pretty much like forcing

yourself into a less size shoe. A six foot tall man refusing

to mind his head on the face of a clear set sign at a walk

through. The brain is comfort seeking, adapting what

works at little effort, adamantly sticking to it until forces

are applied to act otherwise often at a painstaking cost.

I realized that our neuro health is under the mercy of a

protein called I Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor

whose work is to continually develop new neurons . The

chronic stress levels suppressed its growth, with

calamitous consequences to growth and normal

function of certain regions leading to, among other

things, cognitive impairment. No wonder at some

periods in this I couldn’t bet with an ostrich to remember

my way home.

Along the positive strides mentioned earlier that vastly

improved my well being, I carried this behaviour along

as well, unable to disentangle from it. It was no longer

serving the purpose for which I invented it, rather, it was

an unintended by product of the mental illness. As I

created new opportunities for life, I knew this is one

thing I needed to offload. I could not declare a

breakthrough as long as this bit is unresolved. I discovered that doing something seven times over

creates a new file on the list of habits. Unfortunately, to

delete it is not directly proportional to undoing it seven

times over.

Now, I mentioned earlier in the book of the many

sleepless nights at the height of the sickness? It was in

such nights that I devised hopeless attempts to distract

the mind from thoughts of impeding strikes. In the

bankruptcy of my cognitive ability to craft any positive

behavioural tactics, I would engage in salacious

fantasies. I was lured to view pornographic content and

gradually drifted to regular masturbatory behaviour.

This behaviour became an escape route from struggle,

but would eventually become something I would be

hooked to long after the mental illness occupied the back

burners.
